Shawn Fabisiak manages a team of five Building Products Consultants in the Milwaukee market. These consultants are crucial to LaForce’s success, since they handle a large portion of company business! Read on to discover what Shawn has to say about what it takes to be successful in this role.

Building Products Consultants manage updates to existing buildings, such as replacement doors and locks. Shawn’s team must be adept at gathering information and solving problems, since no two construction jobs are ever alike. These employees must be:

  • Organized and self-motivated to plan and execute their own schedules;
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances and customer demands;
  • Great problem-solvers; and
  • Exceptional communicators.

Shawn says that communication, in particular, is crucial with both internal colleagues and external clients, since every project that LaForce fulfills is a team effort. The Building Products Consultant may be the face of the company to the customer, but many aspects take place behind the scenes. In addition, employees need to be flexible when it comes to supporting customers through various communication methods – phone, text, email, and in-person.

Shawn notes that LaForce consultants spend half their time in the office and half their time visiting customers on-site. Typical customers range from school or hospital facility directors to small business owners or maintenance personnel.

One challenge of the job is handling emergency calls and last-minute issues. For example, a building user may experience a broken lock and call LaForce for assistance. Often, an Installation Professional can handle the on-site maintenance, but sometimes Shawn’s team fixes such problems themselves. This requires both technical knowledge and the ability to rely on other LaForce experts for assistance and troubleshooting.

According to Shawn, this team-focused atmosphere is a huge perk for LaForce workers. Once a new problem is encountered and solved, with the help of colleagues, the individual now has more “tools” in his or her “toolbox” to be a more successful Building Products Consultant.
